The Journey

Full tour description

Bari & Matera: Gateway to the South’s intimate soul

Your journey begins where land leans into sea, in the old heart of Bari, a labyrinth of cobbled lanes scented with sea breeze and warm focaccia. As you wander through Bari Vecchia, stories emerge from every arch and doorway: saints and sailors, artisans and echoes of the past. Beneath the soft grandeur of the Basilica of Saint Nicholas and along the sunlit promenade, the present thins, and everything feels quietly eternal. By afternoon, the road leads inland to Matera, where stone and sky become one. In the ancient Sassi, history is carved into the cliffs, lived in the silence, felt in the light. As dusk settles over the ravines, Matera glows with a quiet, timeless majesty.

The Sassi & Itria Valley: In the land of stones

At first light, Matera awakens in whispers. Its labyrinth of stone churches and ancient caves glows with a pale stillness: walking here feels like tracing the breath of humanity across centuries. Every crevice, every worn stair holds memory. Leaving the cliffs behind, the road curves into the Itria Valley, where vineyards, olive trees, and the conical roofs of trulli draw a landscape both surreal and rooted. In Locorotondo, a whitewashed jewel suspended over the hills, time holds its breath. A lunch at a local Masseria with Mariangela, a passionate custodian of local tradition, witnesses the soul of this land through award-winning mozzarella, stories of animal welfare, and the warmth of a true masseria kitchen. The day draws to a close in Martina Franca, where Baroque balconies lean into the quiet, and the light lingers long over the endless folds of countryside.

Lecce: The Baroque capital of light

In Lecce, even the air seems carved from light. The city’s soft limestone has been sculpted into wonder: every façade a baroque tapestry, every cornice a flourish of imagination. The Basilica of Santa Croce rises like an ivory dream, while Piazza Duomo holds the hush of noble secrets and evening rituals. In the midst of all this splendour, the first bite of a pasticciotto, still warm from the oven, is both comfort and revelation. Behind closed doors, you’ll enter the aristocratic soul of the city with a private visit to a historic palazzo: an experience of refinement preserved in time. In Lecce, the senses awaken gently, and the past dances just beneath the surface of every step.

Farewell to the South

As dawn breaks on your final day, the magic holds a little longer. In the hushed stillness of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Cerrate, before the world stirs, you’ll wander among faded frescoes and ancient olive trees, guardians of the land for generations. It’s a moment outside of time, a sacred pause in a place far from maps and noise. The journey returns to Bari, where it all began, but something has shifted. What remains are not just memories, but traces: vivid, intimate, enduring. This was never just a trip. It was an immersion into the soulful, unfiltered beauty of Southern Italy.
